HBL Celebrates 50 Years in Bangladesh, Marking Five Decades of Banking and Trade Support

Habib Bank Limited (HBL) has celebrated 50 years of operations in Bangladesh, marking five decades of engagement with customers, businesses and financial institutions in the country. The milestone highlights HBL’s longstanding presence in Bangladesh and its role in supporting trade, investment and financial connectivity across regional and international markets.

HBL began its operations in Bangladesh in 1976, and over the past five decades has developed its presence alongside the country’s evolving business and financial landscape. The bank says its Bangladesh operations have focused on supporting businesses and financial institutions participating in both domestic and international markets.

HBL Marks Major Bangladesh Milestone

The 50th anniversary was commemorated through a ceremony in Dhaka, bringing together clients, regulators and senior HBL executives. The event provided an opportunity to recognize the bank’s long-term relationship with Bangladesh and its customers.

Among the senior HBL representatives attending the occasion were Sultan Ali Allana, Chairman of HBL; Muhammad Nassir Salim, President and CEO; Farhan Talib, Head International Banking; and Alamgir Morshed, Country Manager Bangladesh.

The gathering also highlighted the importance of relationships between financial institutions and the wider business community as Bangladesh continues to participate in international trade and investment flows.

Five Decades of Business Support

Over its 50 years in Bangladesh, HBL has positioned its operations around serving businesses and financial institutions involved in economic activity across different markets.

The bank’s international network connects markets across South Asia, China, the Middle East and Africa, providing a platform for facilitating trade and financial connectivity. HBL has emphasized Bangladesh’s importance within this wider international footprint.

Such cross-border connectivity has become increasingly important as companies look beyond domestic markets for investment, suppliers, customers and business opportunities. Banks with international networks can play a role in facilitating these financial relationships through trade and banking services.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity

The anniversary celebrations also coincided with meetings between HBL leadership and senior officials and business representatives in Bangladesh.

During the visit, HBL Chairman Sultan Ali Allana and President & CEO Muhammad Nassir Salim met with Masud Khan, Chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC). Discussions focused on matters of mutual interest, including the continued development of Bangladesh’s capital markets, investor participation and connectivity with regional and international markets.

HBL leadership also met Bangladesh’s Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, with discussions covering economic connectivity between Bangladesh and HBL’s key international markets.

Focus on Trade and Investment

Trade finance and international banking remain important components of HBL’s international operations. Bangladesh’s position as an important South Asian economy creates opportunities for financial institutions to support companies involved in cross-border commerce.

HBL has highlighted its role in facilitating trade and investment through its international network, particularly for businesses operating across multiple markets. The bank has also engaged with representatives of Chinese business and diplomatic circles in Bangladesh during its anniversary visit, discussing economic and trade linkages and opportunities to support commercial activity.

Looking Toward the Future

Reaching 50 years provides HBL with an opportunity to reflect on its history in Bangladesh while looking toward the next stage of its operations.

The financial sector is changing rapidly as businesses increasingly demand digital services, international connectivity and efficient financial solutions. At the same time, Bangladesh continues to develop its trade and investment relationships with markets across Asia and beyond.

For HBL, maintaining strong relationships with customers, regulators and business institutions will remain important as it continues its operations in the country.

A Golden Jubilee for HBL Bangladesh

HBL’s 50-year milestone in Bangladesh represents a significant chapter in the bank’s international history. Since entering the country in 1976, the institution has remained involved in supporting businesses, financial institutions and cross-border financial flows.

The anniversary not only celebrates the bank’s past but also reinforces its stated focus on trade, investment and international financial connectivity. As HBL moves beyond its first 50 years in Bangladesh, its continued engagement with the country’s business and financial sectors will remain an important part of its broader regional strategy.
