Arshad Nadeem Finishes 5th at World Athletics Ultimate Championship as Pathirage Wins Javelin Gold
Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem finished fifth in the men’s javelin throw at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, despite producing his best performance of the 2026 season. Sri Lankan thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage stole the spotlight by securing the title with a remarkable 91.09-metre effort.
The competition at Budapest’s National Athletics Centre brought together some of the world’s leading javelin throwers for one of the most anticipated events of the new World Athletics championship. Nadeem entered the contest as one of the major names in the field following his historic Olympic triumph in Paris in 2024.
Nadeem Produces Season-Best Throw
Nadeem began the final with a throw of 74.42 metres before improving to 79.66m on his second attempt. His third throw produced his best mark of the competition, reaching 81.49m.
The distance represented Nadeem’s season-best performance in 2026, but it was not enough to secure a place among the top four athletes. His remaining attempts did not allow him to improve his position, leaving the Pakistani star fifth overall.
Although the result fell short of the podium, the season-best mark provides Nadeem with an encouraging performance as he continues his preparations for upcoming major competitions.
Pathirage Delivers a Stunning Performance
The biggest story of the javelin final was undoubtedly Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage of Sri Lanka.
Pathirage produced a spectacular fourth-round throw of 91.09 metres, becoming the only athlete in the field to surpass the 90-metre mark. His performance secured the championship title and capped an impressive breakthrough season.
Pathirage had already established himself as one of the leading javelin throwers of the season, and his performance in Budapest further strengthened his reputation on the international stage.
Peters and Weber Complete the Podium
Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished second with a best throw of 86.18m, while Germany’s Julian Weber secured third place with 85.89m.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott finished fourth with 82.41m, narrowly staying ahead of Nadeem.
The result highlighted the depth of competition in the men’s javelin, with several established international stars competing for the inaugural Ultimate Championship crown.
Nadeem’s Road Ahead
For Nadeem, the fifth-place finish is another chapter in a challenging 2026 campaign. However, his season-best 81.49m throw suggests that his form can still improve as the year progresses.
Nadeem remains one of Pakistan’s biggest sporting stars and continues to carry significant expectations after winning Olympic gold in Paris with a record-breaking 92.97m throw in 2024.
The World Athletics Ultimate Championship result will therefore be viewed less as an endpoint and more as another step in Nadeem’s return to his best competitive level.
With major international events still ahead, Pakistan’s Olympic champion will now look to build on his Budapest performance and produce stronger throws in his upcoming competitions.
