Punjab Approves Over 125,000 Electric Bikes for Students Under CM Electric Bike Scheme
Scheme Approved by Chief Minister
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the provision of more than 125,000 electric bikes to students across the province under the CM Electric Bike Scheme. The initiative is designed to address the commuting challenges faced by students and provide them with an affordable and environment-friendly mode of transport.
No Down Payment and Government-Covered Costs
The Chief Minister has directed authorities not to collect any down payment from students and has rejected proposals for charges beyond the monthly instalment. The Punjab government will also cover the interest and insurance costs associated with the bikes, reducing the financial burden on recipients to a single fixed monthly payment. Officials have agreed to a monthly instalment of approximately Rs. 3,000.
Portal Launch and Delivery Timeline
Maryam Nawaz has ordered the e-bike portal to open within the current week and directed authorities to ensure that eligible students receive their bikes within six weeks of the scheme’s activation. The swift timeline reflects the government’s intention to operationalise the scheme without delay and deliver tangible benefits to students as quickly as possible.
Scope Beyond Students
While students are the primary beneficiaries, the scheme will also extend to government employees, departments, and delivery workers. This broader scope indicates that the initiative is intended to serve multiple segments of the population while contributing to wider goals around reducing fuel-based commuting across the province.
Safety Equipment and Battery Technology
Students receiving bikes under the scheme will also be provided with helmets and safety rods free of charge. The bikes will feature lithium iron phosphate batteries, a technology known for its stability, longer cycle life, and improved safety compared to conventional lithium-ion alternatives. Additionally, interested students will receive free two-day driving training before taking possession of their bikes.
